The first-aid course: learn life-saving gestures!
Training to pass the Swiss driving test is largely based on the idea that young drivers need to know what to do in the event of an accident or emergency. With this in mind, it’s compulsory to take a first-aid course before you can apply for your learner’s permit. Only then can you take the theoretical driving test.
Taking the form of a 10-hour theoretical course, the first aid course teaches the basic skills needed to help a victim in the event of an accident or medical emergency.
At the end of this course, you’ll receive your first-aid certificate: valid for 6 years, it’s necessary to register for the Highway Code exam.
1) What is the first aid course?
The First Aid course, also known as the Samaritan course, is an essential step for young people wishing to obtain their driving license (car, motorcycle, scooter…).
The aim of this course is to teach you how to perform first aid in the event of an accident. It will teach you how to react appropriately in emergency situations, while waiting for professional help to arrive. At the end of this training, you will receive a first aid certificate. This certificate will enable you to register for the theoretical driving test. It is valid for 6 years, and is recognized by all automotive suppliers.
This theoretical training is essential, as it will give you the skills you need to be a responsible and responsive driver in an emergency. By taking this course, you’ll be better prepared to deal with dangerous situations on the road, and to provide the necessary assistance to other road users.
Good to know: Being able to administer first aid correctly is crucial to preserving life and minimizing risk. We don’t always realize it, but these gestures save lives. Mastering the lateral position, performing cardiac massage, identifying a high-risk situation, taking stock of the injured… These are essential skills that every driver needs to have.
2) Who should attend the first aid course?
The first aid course offered by our driving school in Geneva is aimed at all young people wishing to obtain their driving license in Switzerland. The only condition for taking this course is to be at least 14 years old. Whether you’re new to driving or already have some experience, this course is open to everyone.
The aim is to teach you basic first-aid skills, specifically adapted to situations you may encounter on the road.
Your safety, and that of other road users, depends on your ability to intervene effectively when necessary. Good to know: You don’t need any previous knowledge of the Highway Code or driving to take part in this course.
3) What are the objectives of the first aid course?
The first aid course, run by Lémanique Driving School, is designed to teach you essential first aid skills.
If you take a closer look at the first aid course syllabus, you can identify several major pillars of this learning process.
Taking safety measures in the event of an accident
You will learn how to secure the scene of an accident to avoid any further danger to yourself and others present.
It’s the first thing you do when you arrive at the scene of an accident. The aim is to avoid over-accidents.
Know your rights and duties as a citizen
You will understand your responsibilities as a citizen and the legal obligations involved in providing first aid.
Learn how to alert the emergency services
You will know how to alert the emergency services effectively and provide them with all the necessary information.
For example, you will be trained to assess the condition of an injured person quickly and effectively using the ABCD method (Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability).
This is the key information you need to pass on to the emergency services, so that they can tell you what to do by the time they arrive on the scene.
Mastering emergency intervention
During this 10-hour training course at the Lémanique Driving School, you will learn how to place an unconscious person in a lateral position of safety, and you will be trained in cardiac massage techniques and the use of a defibrillator.
In the case of a bleeding injury, you will also learn how to react and apply a pressure dressing.
You will also be able to react to first-, second- and third-degree burns. To ensure effective communication with emergency services, you will learn how to identify and treat the different types of burns, according to their severity.
Adopting appropriate behavior in traffic
Finally, you will develop an understanding of the safe behavior to adopt as a driver on the road, putting safety at the heart of your actions.
In short, the first aid course aims to train you in the vital gestures and safety measures needed to react effectively in the event of an accident, both on the road and in everyday life.
This training will enable you to become a responsible driver, well prepared to deal with possible emergency situations.
Good to know:
The knowledge acquired during the first aid course is not only useful on the road. They can also save lives in everyday life, in the event of a medical emergency.
4) How is the first aid course run in Geneva?
The first aid course usually lasts 2 days, with a total of 10 hours of instruction. The advantage of dividing the course into two parts is that you can assimilate the knowledge more easily. During these two days, you’ll have both theoretical and practical sessions, combining interactivity and videos for a complete learning experience. The addition of interactive elements and videos aims to make the first aid course more engaging and dynamic.
This pedagogical approach combines different learning media to cater for different learner styles and preferences, while reinforcing knowledge retention and confidence in the application of first aid. Supervised by our certified instructors, you’ll be able to ask any questions you may have to make sure you’ve understood all the life-saving techniques involved.
