Steps to follow to pass the driving license

First aid

If you want to obtain your driving license, you need to complete a mandatory first aid course, also called ‘Samaritan course’, before taking your theory test (for car, motorcycle, and scooter).

It is the first step to obtaining your learner driving license. The aim of this course is to teach you how to provide first aid in case of an accident, and how to react in an emergency situation while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

At the end of the course, you will obtain a first aid certificate, which will allow you to take the theory test. The certificate is valid for six years in any ‘bureau des automobiles’, or motor vehicule office in Switzerland.

Theoretical exam

You will sit your theory test in your canton of residence. If you want to sit the theory test in another canton, you need to send a written request to your home canton.

The test consists of 50 questions for a total score of 140 points, and lasts for 50 minutes.

To pass the exam, you have to get a score of 126 points. A 10% leeway is tolerated. Additional fees will apply if you fail three times.

DCR, OAC, Article 12, paragraph 1

1 The home canton can authorize a candidate to take the basic theory test, the complementary theory test and the practical test in another canton.

Awareness course

The awareness or driving theory course is the third step towards obtaining your driving license.

It follows the first aid and theory courses. It is a mandatory 8-hour course, taking place over 4 sessions of 2 hours each. It is the final step before the practical test. The  awareness course certificate is valid for 2 years.

Driving lesson

The driving lessons offered by Auto-Ecole Lémanique are optional but highly recommended. You will have the opportunity to be assessed by a professional, and practice under the same conditions as in the practical test. Our driving instructors will help you identify and improve your strengths and weaknesses. They are eager to pass on to you all the skills you need to make sure you pass the practical test.

Driving lessons are set at your convenience regarding days, hours and rhythm. Our driving instructors will do their utmost to suit your needs and availabilities.

Base motorcycle course

The motorcycle driving course recognized by the ‘Office Fédéral des Routes’ (OFROU), (or ‘Federal Office of Roads’), and offered by our driving school in Geneva are mandatory for obtaining your two-wheel driving license. The required number of hours varies according to the vehicle category:

For a scooter license (class A1) – a mandatory 8 hour practical driving course

For a motorcycle license (class A) – a mandatory 12 hour practical driving course

Moreover, if you wish to upgrade from a scooter license to a motorcycle license, you will have to take an additional 6 hour practical driving course.

You can take this course right after passing your theory test, and if it suits you, before attending the awareness course. However, you will have take the mandatory awareness course before taking your practical driving test for scooter ( Class A1) or motorcycle (Class A).

During the course, your instructor will assess your driving under exam conditions to prepare you for the practical test. At the end of the course, he/she will sign a certificate attesting that you have followed the course. The certificate is valid for two years.

Our motorcycle driving lessons are tailor-made to suit your needs. We will gladly accompany you to the Geneva Automobile Office when you take your practical driving test.

Above all, we want you to enjoy the experience of driving your scooter or motorcycle, and we will give you all the tools you need to feel confidence on your road to success..

Practical exam

During the practical test, the driving inspector assesses your driving. You will have to successfully manage all the situations encountered while driving. At the end of the test, the driving inspector will complete an test report. We recommend that you prepare the practical exam with our driving instructors. The assessments will be carried out in the same conditions and on the same routes as the final practical test.

Two phases

The additional training must be followed within twelve months of the issuance of the test-driving license, with approved private organizers.

The additional training must allow participants to break quickly, safely and using the maximum deceleration capacity available to the vehicle as well as to apply the principles of economical and environment-friendly driving.

In addition, it should allow them to develop their knowledge of the main accident factors by making them experiment with driving situations in conditions close to reality.
