Steps to follow to pass the driving license
If you want to obtain your driving license, you need to complete a mandatory first aid course, also called ‘Samaritan course’, before taking your theory test (for car, motorcycle, and scooter).
It is the first step to obtaining your learner driving license. The aim of this course is to teach you how to provide first aid in case of an accident, and how to react in an emergency situation while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.
At the end of the course, you will obtain a first aid certificate, which will allow you to take the theory test. The certificate is valid for six years in any ‘bureau des automobiles’, or motor vehicule office in Switzerland.
You will sit your theory test in your canton of residence. If you want to sit the theory test in another canton, you need to send a written request to your home canton.
The test consists of 50 questions for a total score of 140 points, and lasts for 50 minutes.
To pass the exam, you have to get a score of 126 points. A 10% leeway is tolerated. Additional fees will apply if you fail three times.
DCR, OAC, Article 12, paragraph 1
1 The home canton can authorize a candidate to take the basic theory test, the complementary theory test and the practical test in another canton.
The awareness or driving theory course is the third step towards obtaining your driving license.
It follows the first aid and theory courses. It is a mandatory 8-hour course, taking place over 4 sessions of 2 hours each. It is the final step before the practical test. The awareness course certificate is valid for 2 years.
The driving lessons offered by Auto-Ecole Lémanique are optional but highly recommended. You will have the opportunity to be assessed by a professional, and practice under the same conditions as in the practical test. Our driving instructors will help you identify and improve your strengths and weaknesses. They are eager to pass on to you all the skills you need to make sure you pass the practical test.
