First of all, it’s important to know that to obtain a motorcycle license, it’s not enough simply to take 4 or 12 hours of motorcycle lessons.
You’ll need to validate a lot of prior knowledge before you can register for the basic motorcycle courses.
At what age can I start taking motorcycle lessons?
Motorcycle courses are designed for :
– Over 15 years of age for scooter driving license (category A1).
– Over 18 years of age to obtain a motorcycle driving license (category A).
This means that if you hold an A1 license and wish to take the 4-hour course to obtain an A license, you must be 18 years of age.
What are the requirements for taking a motorcycle course?
In addition to the age requirements, taking a motorcycle course also means completing certain administrative steps.
1 – Register for the first-aid course (samaritan)
First and foremost, it is compulsory to have completed the first aid course (Samaritan). This course teaches you the first aid techniques and emergency numbers that can save lives on the road.
2 – Pass the theory test of the Highway Code
You will then have to pass the theory test for the Highway Code. You’ll need to know about traffic signs, road hazards, road signs, regulations… In short: all the theoretical knowledge that will make you a good driver (of both motorcycles and cars).
3 – Get your student permit
Once you’ve passed your theory test, you’ll need to take an eye test before you can apply for a learner’s permit.
This student permit is valid for 4 months. During these 4 months, you will be authorized to drive a motorcycle (always make sure you have the student driver sign visible on your motorcycle, to alert other road users).
4 – Take motorcycle lessons in Geneva
During these 4 months, you will have to take your basic motorcycle lessons. You can also take the awareness course, which is a prerequisite for taking the practical test for your motorcycle license.
If, within these 4 months, you have taken the motorcycle course and passed your awareness course, your learner’s permit will be extended for a further 12 months. A year during which you can take the practical test for your motorcycle license.
All you have to do is register!
