LEARNING RACES<\/h2>\n\n

The learner’s permit is issued for 24 months – non-extendable<\/strong>. It entitles the holder to take part in learner’s runs with cars accompanied by <\/a>a person aged 23 or over who has held a driver’s license corresponding to the vehicle category for at least three years, and who is no longer on probation.<\/p>\n\n

Learner drivers will only use heavily trafficked roads if they have sufficient training, and freeways or semi-motorways if they are ready to take the practical test. <\/p>\n\n

During training runs and for the practical car test, cars must be fitted with a white “L” on a blue background at the rear.<\/p>\n\n

PRACTICAL CAR TEST<\/h2>\n\n

Prerequisite<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Candidates can only register for the practical test after passing the theory test and completing an 8-hour traffic theory course with an approved driving instructor. The course is valid for 2 years. Anyone who already has an A1 or B1 driver’s license is exempt from this course.<\/p>\n\n

Exam registration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Once the driving theory course has been validated by the approved instructor, the candidate can register for the practical test online at www.ge.ch\/vehicules under “Rendez-vous pour examen th\u00e9orique + pratique” or at the driving license counter. Examination appointments cannot be booked by telephone.<\/p>\n\n

When booking an appointment, please allow four to six weeks until the date of the road test.<\/p>\n\n

Withdrawal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Appointment cancellations must be made at least 96 hours in advance (4 working days).<\/p>\n\n

Otherwise, the examination fee remains payable. The same applies to any departure due to the candidate (e.g. candidate’s lateness, non-compliant vehicle, etc.).<\/p>\n\n

Review<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

On the day of the practical test, the candidate will be seated in the area indicated by the “EXAMEN PRATIQUE VOITURE” sign, after depositing his or her learner’s permit and, if applicable, driver’s license in the mailbox provided. Candidates must also hold a driving licence for the test vehicle.<\/p>\n\n

Vehicles accepted for the practical car test<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Candidates must present themselves with a car weighing no more than 3,500 kg, in perfect condition and capable of a speed of at least 120 km\/h.<\/p>\n\n

Cars must be fitted with dual controls or an effective handbrake (when the lever is operated, the wheels must lock), located between the front seats directly accessible to the expert and capable of being operated while driving in an emergency. Vehicles equipped with an electrically operated parking brake or a pedal-operated parking brake are not allowed to take the practical test (see images below).<\/p>\n\n

Cars must be fitted with tires with a profile greater than 1.6mm. Depending on weather conditions, winter equipment may be required. The speedometer must be visible (0 to 120 km\/h) from the passenger seat. Lights must not be illuminated on the dashboard (e.g. ABS, AIRBAG, brakes).<\/p>\n\n

IMPORTANT!<\/h2>\n\n

If the above conditions are not met, the examination will not take place and the examination fee remains payable. A new appointment will have to be arranged by the candidate. A fee of CHF 120 (subject to change) is payable when registering for the new examination.<\/p>\n\n

Duration of practical car test<\/h2>\n\n

Anyone who fails the practical test twice may not be admitted to a new practical test if he or she submits a certificate from a driving instructor certifying that his or her driver training has been completed. Third failure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

If the learner’s permit is still valid, the applicant can only be admitted to a new test following a positive driver’s aptitude test. The category fee (CHF 120, subject to change) must be paid when registering for the new exam.<\/p>\n\n
