The first aid course, also known as the ‘Samaritan course’, is the first step to obtaining your driving license! During the course, you will be taught how to apply first aid in case of an accident, and will learn the emergency phone numbers. The course is in French and understandable to English speakers.

What is the first aid course?

If you want to obtain your driving license, you need to complete a mandatory first aid course, also called ‘Samaritan course’, before taking your theory test (for car, motorcycle, and scooter).

It is the first step to obtaining your learner driving license.The aim of this course is to teach you how to provide first aid in case of an accident, and how to react in an emergency situation while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

At the end of the course, you will obtain a first aid certificate, which will allow you to take the theory test. The certificate is valid for six years in any ‘bureau des automobiles’, or motor vehicule office in Switzerland.

Who is the first aid course for?

The first aid course provided by our driving school is for anyone above the age of 14 wishing to obtain his/her driving license in Switzerland. You do not need prior knowledge of road traffic regulations or how to drive to follow this course.

What are the objectives of the first aid course?

First-aid course, our instructors from the Driving School Lémanique in Geneva will teach you:

- How to safely behave in case of an accident

- The rights and obligations of a citizen

- How to contact the emergency services

- How to perform a physical assessment (ABCD)

- How to safely place someone in the recovery position

- How to execute a heart massage (CPR) / Use a defibrillator

- How to stop severe bleeding (compression bandage)

- How to perform first aid on 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns

- How to behave in traffic

After completing the Samaritan course, you will obtain your first aid course certificate, which is valid for 6 years. It will enable you to apply for a learner driving license in any ‘bureau des automobiles’, or motor vehicule office in Switzerland in order to take your theory test.

How is the first aid course organized?

The first aid course usually takes place over two days, for a total of 10 hours. The course is divided into two parts: theory and practice, where students are placed in the situation of the injured and/or rescuer.

The first aid course takes place on our premises at 6 rue de Lyon, Geneva 1201. It is provided by qualified instructors.

After completing the course, you will obtain your first aid certificate, which is valid for 6 years. It will enable you to register for your theory test in any ‘bureau des automobiles’, or motor vehicule office in Switzerland.

Legal information

When sitting the basic theory test for class A and B or sub categories A1 and B1, the driving license applicant will have to present the certificate proving that the first aid to the injured course has been completed.

The candidate shall prove that he/she has received the first aid course by producing a certificate from a driving school approved by the ‘OFROU’ (Federal Roads Office, or FEDRO). This certificate will only be issued to applicants who have followed the full course. It cannot be older than six years.

The first aid to the injured course covers:

a. the safety measures to take in case of an accident and how to contact the rescue services;

b. knowledge of the measures to be taken prior the intervention of the physician in order to maintain the physiological functions necessary for survival;

c. knowledge of the position in which to put the injured, artificial breathing for the injured who can no longer breathe, how to stop severe bleeding, and the basics of heart massage (CPR).**

The organization and content of the first aid courses, as well as the requirements imposed on instructors have to be approved by the ‘OFROU’(Federal Roads Office, or FEDRO).
