Before applying for a driver’s license to the road traffic office (Service cantonal des Véhicules), your visual acuity need to be assessed. The only certified optician will be approved by the road traffic office. The sight control is valid in twelve months.

DCR, OAC, Article 9, paragraph 1a-b, 2, 3

1.     Before submitting an application for a driver’s license, a driving license or professional license to carry passengers, the applicant has to validate their visual acuity from:

a.     Of a doctor holding a federal degree or a approved foreign degree who’s working in Switzerland

b.     Or a graduated optician who’s working in Switzerland.

2.     Control will focus on visual acuity, visual field and eye movement (diplopia). 

3.     Sight control shall not be more than 24 months from the time of application.

In theoretical examination to the Road Traffic Office, you will have to follow the entire of First Aid course. Thus, you will prove that the training was followed with providing a certificate approved by the Federal Office of Roads.

The certificate is valid for 6 years. The aim of the course is to apply the First aid courses, and to know the emergency numbers phone.

DCR, OAC, Article 10, paragraph 1, 2, 3 and 4

1 By the enrolling for the basic theoretical examination, the applicant for a class A or B driver’s license or class A1 or B1 driver’s license have to submit a certificate stating that he has followed the First aid course for wounded persons.

2 The candidate shall prove that he has received a driving course certified by a driving school and approved by the Federal Office of Roads. This certificate will only be issued to applicants who’s follow the entire, of course. It’s not been more than six years.

3. The First aid course for the wounded persons related to:

a   the instructions on safety measures during accident and how to warn rescue services;

b The knowledge of the measures until the physician intervenes in order to keep the physiological functions necessary for survival;

c the knowledge of the correct position and the artificial breathing for the wounded person, the way to stop severe bleeding and the basics of cardiac massages.

4 The structure, the schedule of First aid courses and the requirements to the driver’s instructor have to be approved by the Federal Office of Road.

You will need to fill the driver’s license application form. With this paper, you have to attach:

   • Two color photos of passport,

   • Attestation of the first-aid course,

   • A valid identity card

DCR, OAC, Article 11, paragraphs 1 and 3

1 Any person wishes to get a driver’s license, a driving license or an authorization for transporting a passenger as a professional needed to have to the competent authority or to one of the designated services:

    a   An application form in accordance with Schedule 4, entirely filled and in accordance with the truth,

   b   Two color photos of passport photos format 35’ 45 mm,

   c A certificate proved the full participation in a first aid course according to Art. 10.

3 When filling the first application, the applicant has to appear himself with a valid identity card and photos. The person entitled to receive the application shall verify and confirm the identity of the applicant by affixing his/her stamp and signature on the application form, which he/she will transmit to the competent authority.

You will carry out your theoretical examination in your home canton. A application to the canton of residence can be made in order to carry out your theoretical examination in other canton.

The exam will last 50 minutes, include 50 questions and will be marked on 140 points.

To pass your exam, you have to get 126 points. A leeway of error of 10% is condoned. Beyond three failures, it will be lead to extra cost.

Release of driver’s license—Category B

You will be received the driver’s license upon you pass the theoretical examination.

1 The driver’s license is issued upon the successful basic theoretical examination. If it is not necessary to pass such an examination, the driving license shall be granted with all the conditions have been fulfilled.

The awareness course or driving theory is a mandatory course. The aim of the awareness course you will be a person responsible of the peril you may encounter all driving. The driver instructor attest your input in the course entirely by signing a certificate issued with the driver’s license by the Road Traffic Office (OCV). The course is valid until two years.

DCR, OAC, Article 18, Paragraphs 1, 4 and 5

1 All individual wants to get a category A or B, A1 or B1 of driver’s license have to be able to proof he has taken a driving theory course. This course should not be older than two years.

4 The course aims such as improvement the way of road traffic and the ability to perceive hazards, in order to induce the driver’s license to move defensively, with due regard and sense of responsibility. The awareness course lasts in total 8 hours. It will have to be monitored by a driving instructor.

5 The driving instructor is required to provide the driver’s license a certificate as a proof the latter has taken the driving theory course.

Driving Lesson are optional, but highly recommended. Thus, you will have the opportunity to learn, and be evaluated by driving instructor as at the practical exam. Category A1

Would you like to acquire your A1 driving license (125cm3, 11kw)? Take 8 hours of practical course at Auto-Ecole Lémanique into two parts: Technical course, road traffic course.

The driving instructor have to attest your input in the course by signing a certificate issued with the driver's license by the OCV. The courses are valid until two years.

3   Basic practical instruction is:

      b   For the category A 1 driver's license : eight hours;

A 12H category A

Would you like to acquire your License of category A limited (35KW) or unlimited (minimum 40KW)? Take 12 hours of practical lessons. These 12 hours will be divided into 3 blocks (parts 1, 2 and 3). During the courses, you will have a technical course, road traffic course and counter-guide.

The driving instructor have to attest your input in the course by signing a certificate with the driver's license approved by the road traffic office (OCV). The courses are valid until two years.

3   Basic practical instruction is:

      a   For category A driver's license applicants: 12 hours;

A 6H

If you want to acquire your category A driving license and already hold the category A1, you will have to take 6 hours of practical driving courses. These will be divided into 2 parts (2A and 3). During these courses, you will have a refresh part of 8 hours done under category A1 and a counte-guide courses.

The instructor have to attest your input of the course by signing a certificate approved with the driver's license by the road traffic office (OCV). The courses are valid until two years.

DCR, OAC, article 19, paragraph 3, letter c

3   Basic practical instruction is: 

c       For category A driver's license holders who hold a A1 driver's license: six hours.

During the pratical exam, the expert assesses your driving. You will have to manage all the situations on the drive. At the end of the exam, the driving inspector shall complete a test report. We need to you prepare for exams with our driving instructors. The assessment will be carried out under the same conditions and the same courses.

1   In the practical exam, the driving expert checks whether the candidate is capable, even in a difficult case to drive in accordance with the rules of road traffic, knowing how to anticipate and with respect to the users road

2nd exam: Learners driver who fails his / her first exam can register for the second time.

3rd exam: Learners driver who fails twice in the practical exam only have to be admitted for a another one after the driving instructor approved her / his training of course is completely.

DCR, OAC, Article 23, paragraph 1

1   All individual fails twice in the practical exam can be admitted to a further practical exam only if the driving instructor approved her / his training of course is completely.

A learner driver who fails three times in his or her exam are not autorize to take a fourth one without having passed a positive test at an action and development institute in road traffic psychology. When the learner driver is considered fit to drive, he / she can to pass a new exam. After the success of exam, he / she will get his / her driving license on trial.

DCR, OAC, Article 23, paragraph 2

2 &nbs; 2 A person who fails three times in the practical exam may be admitted to a fourth exam only after a favorable test according to Article 16 (3).

3   The validity of driver's license expires when

      a   The holder has failed the driving test three times in a row and the competent authority denies, on the basis of a test, the person's suitability to drive.

Obtaining a Driving License 

A test drive license is issued to you upon successful completion of your practical exam. This driver's license is a limited period for three years.

DCR, OAC, Article 24a, paragraph 1

1 A category A and B driving license shall be issued on probation. This provision does not apply to persons who already hold an unlimited driving license of one of these categories.

You will have three years to complete the 2-phase courses.

First day: to improve your ability to anticipate and avoid dangerous road traffic situations, to refine the participants' awareness of their own abilities, to optimize their perception of traffic road and to promote courteous and environmentally friendly behavior.

The driver's license who completes the complementary training (2-phase course) and has not committed an infraction of the traffic law obtains his / her final driving license. A certificate will be issued at the end of the training.Drivers who do not take the courses within three years of validity will receive an additional three months. If the driver fails to complete the course within three months, the license will be withdrawn.

DCR, OAC, Article 24b, paragraphs 1 and 2

1   The licensing authority shall issue an unlimited driving license at the end of the probationary period if the applicant has undergone further training under Articles 27a to 27g. Participation in further training is evidenced by the certificate on the application form set out in Annex 4a. The cantonal authority may exempt the applicant from the obligation to produce the certificate if the course organizer confirms electronically that the applicant has completed the two-day course.

2   If the holder of the test driving license has not taken the additional training during the probationary period and wishes to drive motor vehicles of categories and subcategories, he must make up the Additional training within an additional three months.

As soon as the license holder submits to the competent authority the certificate of the organizer of the course according to which he has enrolled in the course, he shall issue him a driving license limited to the two-day course.
