Theory course

The theory course will help you pass your theory test, which is the second step to getting your driving license. It will also help you fully understand traffic priorities, which you will have to put into practice during your driving lessons. This course is provided by our driving instructors on our premises in Geneva.

What is the theory course?

The theory course offered by Auto-Ecole Lémanique is highly recommended for those wishing to obtain their driving license. The course will help you to easily pass your theory test, also known as the ‘Highway Code’ test, and to fully understand how traffic priorities work.

You will receive your learner driving license from the ‘bureau des automobiles’, or ‘motor vehicle office’ as soon as you have passed the theory test, which is the second mandatory step in obtaining your driving license (for car, motorcycle or scooter). It is valid for 24 months.

We offer you training courses specifically tailored to your needs, and based on the official quizzes of the Swiss theory test. During the lessons, we will teach you the Highway Code, which will enable you to pass your theory test with confidence at the ‘bureau des automobiles’, or ‘Motor Vehicle Office’ in Geneva (or elsewhere in Switzerland).

The learner driving license is issued upon successfully passing the basic theory test. It  is valid for two years. You will then be able to start learning how to drive with our driving lessons for car or motorcycle.

Who is the theory course for?

The theory course is ideal for anyone over 16*  who wishes to pass their theory test at the first attempt. 

Passing the theory test is the second step to getting your learner driving license. It is an important step which will allow you to start your driving lessons in Geneva (see our car driving courses and our motorcycle driving courses).

 * Those wishing to obtain their motorcycle learner driving license (sub category A1) are allowed to take the theory test one month before their 16th birthday

What are the objectives of the theory course?

During the theory course, our instructors at the Auto-Ecole Lémanique in Geneva will teach you:

- The basic traffic rules 

- Road signs

- The Road Traffic Act (LCR)

- The Road Traffic Directive (OCR)

- The Road Signs Directive (OSR)

How will the theory course take place?

The theory course takes place on the premises of our driving school at 6 Rue de Lyon, Geneva 1201.

You will be in a group of maximum 12 people for a total of 4 hours  (1 hour per evening) for theoretical and interactive learning sessions. You will finish the course with a mock theory test based on the course material.

The theory course taught at our  driving school in Geneva focuses on the quiz questions of the official theory tests in Switzerland. The official theory test consists of 50 questions, and lasts for 60 minutes. A maximum of 15 negative points is authorized to pass your theory test and get your learner driving license (Class A) or learner motorcycle license (Class B).

To put you in the exam conditions, you will take mock tests which will be corrected in class. We will also give you a hard copy and a computer on which to practice your theory tests.

Legal Information

The theory course is optional. An eyesight test performed by a certified optician is required as part of the application to a  learner driving license (Hyperlink office of cars).
